Manages Crankcase Pressure: During normal engine operation, some high-pressure gases and unburnt fuel “blow by” the piston rings and enter the crankcase. The PCV system, including the AOS, relieves this pressure by venting the gases to the intake manifold to be re-combusted, preventing pressure build-up that could cause oil leaks or gasket failure.
Separates Oil from Vapors: The blow-by gases contain a fine mist of hot oil vapor. The AOS uses a series of baffles, filters, or centrifugal force to cause these oil droplets to condense and separate from the air.
Returns Oil to the Engine: A key distinction of an Air Oil Separator (as opposed to a simple “catch can”) is that it is a closed-loop system that automatically drains the collected, liquid oil back into the engine’s oil pan, which minimizes oil loss and ensures proper lubrication.
Ensures Cleaner Air Intake: By filtering out oil, the AOS ensures that only clean air is sent back into the intake manifold. This prevents a sticky film of oil from coating the intake system, intercooler, and intake valves.
